There are two versions of the emergency guidelines.
For children there is a standard version that is detailed, and a short version for use in A&E. We suggest that a copy of the latter one should be given to the family for use in an emergency
For Adults there are also two versions; an oral one and an intravenous one.
The "child" guidelines are intended for children and adolescents up to end of puberty. After that age, doses are likely to be different and services for adults should be consulted. In particular lower doses of amino acid mixtures per kg may be adequate for patients aged over 12-14 years & will avoid the emergency feeds being very hyperosmolar.
These guidelines are applicable to most patients but there will be occasions when alternative management is appropriate.
There is very little evidence base for the management of inborn errors so these guidelines have been written taking account of what is regarded as the current best practice. They have been scrutinised carefully but there may still be errors. Furthermore new evidence at any time can invalidate these recommendations. No liability whatsoever can be taken as a result of using this information.
